WEEKEND PREVIEW: U12s And U14s Ready For All Ireland Clashes

(10 Mar 2017)

By Jamie Moore

The new DDSL is back this weekend with 14 Belvo teams in action.

The ties of the week see the U12 and U14 Premier teams in SFAI All Ireland Cup 1/4 finals.

The U12s make the long trip to Westport United in Mayo for a 2.30pm kick off.

Daragh Murtagh (above) got the winner in their 1-0 victory over Avenue United in the last round.

Manager John Moore is looking forward to the game.

"The players have trained really well again all week and we are all looking forward to Saturday's match. The boys have performed very well in all of the games so far. We know this will be a difficult match but the boys are ready to step up to the challenge. Westport won't want to allow us back on the road to Dublin with a win."

"We worked on some aspects of how we want to play in training on Wednesday night as well as on some set pieces at it was great to have some of our former players Cian Lee, Richie O'Farrell and Padraig Finnerty involved in the session."

"They told the lads about their own All Ireland experiences playing for Belvo. We can't wait for kick off on Saturday."

Defending Champs

Darren Hennessy's U14s have a shorter trip for their game, Clontarf to be exact.

The defending champions host Nenagh AFC from Tipperary at 2pm.

Having beat Malahide United in the Regional SFAI Cup last weekend, Darren hopes they keep up their good form.

"Yes we are in a good period of form at the minute with some good wins since the Christmas break. Our record in Clontarf has been really good but we found out in the last round about how difficult it is to win All Ireland matches when everything is on the line."

Goals from Tobi Jinad and Ross Fay (above) helped the boys in blue beat Letterkenny 2-1 in a tight game.

"We played well in the match and won it with a late goal from Ross, it was a great feeling and we would like more of the same this Saturday."

"Winning the competition last year means nothing now, yes the boys would love to do it again, but we won't be thinking about that now, our focus is fully on trying to beat a good Nenagh team and hopefully we'll be able to do that."

Seven more games take place on Saturday with six on Sunday and The Belvo Academy is on in Clontarf as usual between 9.30am and 12 noon.

Our latest academy graduates team play their first ever 'real' Belvo game. The U8 Emerald sees Belvo vs Glasnevin in Clontarf at 12.15pm, straight after The Academy.
