Belvedere U15 Captain and Ireland U15 international Troy Parrott been named in the Republic of Ireland U16 squad for a UEFA Development Tournament in Mayo later this month.

Paul Osam's squad will face Northern Ireland, Kosovo and Denmark with their first match taking place on Sunday May 21st.

Troy has played a key roll in Jason Donohue's U15 squad this season and has now been given the opportunity to play for his country a year above his age.

Happy

Troy spoke to BelvedereFC.Com about his call-up.

“I’m very happy to be called up for the U16s, it’s always a proud moment for me and my family and with the U15 season being over now, I’m looking forward to hopefully playing in a few more games next week.”

Parrott played in 12 Ireland U15 games this season, six competitive games and six friendly matches, including the Hibernia Cup.

He captained his country once, and scored six goals in those 12 matches.

He says he had hoped to be called up to the U16s at some stage.

“There are a few players in the Ireland U17s, U18s and U19s who have played a year above their age and it’s natural for all of the players in age group to want to play a year up so I’m happy to have the chance to do that.”

“It's good that they pick younger players because it gives you the experience of what it's like, which will help for next season.”

Challenge

So what challenges will he face playing against a year above his age?

“I think I’ll be fine. I’ve played a trained with the Belvo teams both one year and two years above my age every now and again, so that will be a help. I’ve also been working hard in the hard, I’m getting stronger etc and I think that will be the main test for me.”

“Some of the U16s will still be bigger and stronger that me but I think I'll handle it well. I have always have handled playing against bigger players and I’m planning to do the same this time.”

Troy says his experience of those 12 U15 games against the likes of Holland, Poland, Czech Republic and Norway will be a big help.

“It’s always good to get called up for the Irish team, and I’m lucky enough to have been in every U15 squad since the start, they’ve all given me really good experience. I expect the games to be hard and physical and the other teams to play good football but I know we’ll prepare well for the games, and hopefully we can win them.”

Coach

Head Coach Paul Osam spoke to FAI.ie about his squad.

"The expectation will be to perform well and our aim is to play well. The players who've been in before will have the chance to build on their international experience and add to it."

"The new players have a challenge in that they need to take on a lot of information in a short time frame and ourselves in the staff have the challenge to pass that information on to them."
